As of May 2021, 12 Jaguar I-Pace cars were sold in the Netherlands. The sales volume has been decreasing since 2018, the year of its release and highest sales volume so far, amounting to roughly 3,500 units. The Jaguar I-Pace is an electric car model of Tata Motors, the first electric SUV from a premium automaker on the European car market. With a similar price range and radius of action as the Tesla Models S and X, it was the first real competition to the American car manufacturer. From a sales perspective, the Jaguar I-Pace outperformed both the Tesla Model S and Model X in 2020.
Significant increase in Tesla Model 3 sales
In the Netherlands, sales of both Tesla’s models and the Jaguar I-Pace decreased in 2020. This was caused by the newly modified additional tax rates for leasing premium electric cars. However, Tesla’s Model 3 was priced below 50,000 euros, therefore avoiding the additional tax rate of 22 percent for leasing. This resulted in an explosive growth of sales for this model in 2019, and a better sales performance than its counterparts' in 2020, reaching nearly 8,400 sold units. Nevertheless, the leasing tax advantages for cheaper electric vehicles grew to eight percent in 2020. This tax will further increase in the following years, eventually ending up on the same rates as the tax for petrol, diesel, and hybrid cars.
Reasons to buy or not to buy an electric car
According to a survey conducted in the Netherlands in 2019, one of the main reasons to consider buying an electric car was related to the environment. Additionally, the advantage of purchasing an electric car was also not having to refuel. But what are the reasons not to buy an electric vehicle? In 2019, over 60 percent of respondents indicated that electric cars were too expensive to purchase, and one out of four respondents pointed out that the radius of action of these vehicles was insufficient. Furthermore, 23 percent of respondents stated they'd rather wait for a more common car to hit the market before considering buying an electric car.
