Most people associate startup culture with San Francisco and for a good reason, as the city hosted the highest number of privately held companies valued over a billion U.S. dollars, known as unicorns, in 2023. At that time, 190 unicorns had their headquarters in the Californian tech capital, while New York housed 133 of them. Beijing came third in the ranking with 78 unicorns.
