The share of households with dogs as pets increased from four and a half percent in 2014 to 7.9 percent in 2023. The increase in the number of households getting dogs and cats as pets had led to an increase in value of pet food sales to about 629 million U.S. dollars in 2023, up from 172 million U.S dollars in 2016.
