Daily time spent watching non-public service TV in Denmark 2018-2019, by age

From 2018 to 2019, the average daily time spent watching non-public television in Denmark decreased in the age groups of three to 54 years. To give an example, whereas the amount was 34 minutes among 19 to 34 year-olds in 2018, the time spent watching commercial TV was 29 minutes one year later. By contrast, the figure increased among the people aged 71 years and older, from 90 minutes in 2018 to 91 minutes as of 2019.

What is non-public TV?

Non-public TV is also known as private or commercial broadcasting and is financed either via advertising, sponsorships, or subscriptions. Some TV channels are funded through donations. In Denmark, private television became less popular according to the most recent data. While the daily time spent amounted to 86 minutes in 2010, the people spent on average only 51 minutes per day watching these non-public TV stations in 2019.

Public broadcasting channels are owned by the government and are funded by receivers’ fees. In 2020, Danes had to pay an annual media license fee of 1,353 Danish kroner. In the future, it will be replaced by financing public broadcasting through taxes.
