According to a poll conducted in South Korea in 2022, almost 35 percent of respondents said they would send their children to study abroad. In the same survey, a low level of trust in teachers was shown in regards to the perceived competence of primary and secondary teachers in Korea.
Korean students going to study abroad
Many Korean students have chosen to study abroad. The main reason for studying abroad is that they can enjoy a variety of opportunities in an advanced educational system. In particular, the United States is the most preferred study abroad area because it is the most familiar English-speaking country for Koreans. The number of Korean students enrolled in the U.S. universities in 2020/2021 was around 39 thousand, the third-highest.
Efforts for internationalization of Korean universities
Therefore, the Korean government is putting efforts to globalize universities so that Korean students can enjoy a variety of opportunities without going to study abroad. The Songdo commercial district is designated to attract universities from other countries. They have opened several branches for those looking for an international degree in Korea. Higher education institutions have gradually signed contracts with foreign partners for credit exchanges, degree programs, research projects, and instructor exchanges. Local undergraduate students can now easily take courses in English, as well as interact with foreign professors and students from culturally diverse backgrounds. The number of foreign students in higher education institutions in South Korea has increased during a past decade.
