Average debt value of new mortgage borrowers in Sweden 2012-2022
The average debt value of new mortgage debtors in Sweden increased almost each year over the period from 2012 to 2022, except for 2018. In 2022, the average debt value of new mortgages was approximately 2.82 million Swedish kronor. In Sweden, about half of the households live in an owner-occupied home with a mortgage, making it one of the biggest mortgage markets in Europe. The country has the fifth-highest value of mortgages outstanding but ranks lower in terms of gross residential mortgage lending.
