Number of new mortgage borrowers in Sweden 2012-2022
The number of new mortgage borrowers in Sweden peaked in 2015, when the number of households with debts reached over 31,000. In 2022, the number of borrowers amounted to over 20,000 households, which was a decline compared to the previous year. In Sweden, about half of the households live in an owner-occupied home with a mortgage, making it one of the biggest mortgage markets in Europe. The country has the fifth-highest value of mortgages outstanding but ranks lower in terms of gross residential mortgage lending.
