Formaldehyde accounted for a 29 percent share of the global market for methanol as of 2021, which was the largest market segment of any end product. Gasoline blending accounted for a ten percent share of methanol use worldwide.
The largest use overall for methanol is as a feedstock for plastics. It is also used as a feedstock for synthetic resins, dyestuffs, perfumes, and pharmaceuticals, among other uses.
