The Stockholm area accounted for the largest share of households with new mortgages in Sweden in 2022, reaching 26 percent. The Gothenburg area had 12 percent of the new mortgage borrowers in the country, whereas seven percent were within the Malmö area that year. In Sweden, about half of the households live in an owner-occupied home with a mortgage, making it one of the biggest mortgage markets in Europe. The country has the fifth-highest value of mortgages outstanding but ranks lower in terms of gross residential mortgage lending.

The source adds the following information: "Stockholm” refers to the 26 municipalities that constitute the Greater Stockholm area. “Gothenburg” refers to the 13 municipalities that constitute the Greater Gothenburg area. “Malmö” refers to the 12 municipalities that constitute the Greater Malmö area. “Other cities” includes the municipalities of Borås, Eskilstuna, Gävle, Halmstad, Helsingborg, Jönköping, Karlstad, Kristianstad, Linköping, Norrköping, Sundsvall, Umeå, Uppsala, Västerås, Växjö and Örebro. “Rest of Sweden” includes the municipalities that have not already been mentioned in the above categories.
