In 2018, the debt that Costa Rica's central government owed to creditors based in the country was more than four times the amount of debt held with foreign creditors. In the period between 2015 and 2018, Costa Rica's external debt in relation to the country's gross domestic product (GDP) has remained steady at a range between ten and eleven percent, while its internal debt has increased more than eleven percentage points.
