In 2018, the debt that the Dominican Republic's central government owed to foreign creditors (26.6 percent of the country's gross domestic product) was more than twice than the amount of debt held with creditors based in the country. In the period between 2015 and 2018, the Dominican Republic's both internal and external debts in relation to its GDP have been rising at a steady pace, except for 2018, when the country's internal debt to GDP ratio decreased for the first time since 2015.
