In 2023, the public debt that Nicaragua's central government owed to foreign creditors equaled 40.3 percent of the country's GDP. The volume of external debt in relation to GDP has fallen considerably in comparison to 2002, when it stood at 86.2 percent, although it has shown a slightly increasing trend since 2008.
