Distribution of votes in the 1936 US presidential election

The 38th presidential election of the United States took place in 1936, during the Great Depression, and saw incumbent President Franklin D. Roosevelt of the Republican Party face off against the Democratic Party's Alfred M. Landon. President Roosevelt's New Deal policies, which aimed to heal the economic damage caused by the depression, proved to be extremely popular among the general public, and even Landon supported many of these policies, though he argued that they were often inefficient.

Results

President Roosevelt won the largest, contested victory in US election history. The incumbent president took over 98 percent of the electoral votes, a feat only matched by George Washington and James Monroe, although these elections were uncontested. Roosevelt is also just one of four presidents to ever receive more than sixty percent of the popular vote, with the others being Warren G. Harding (1920), Lyndon B. Johnson (1964) and Richard Nixon (1972). Landon received just 1.5 percent of the electoral votes, taking just two states, compared to Roosevelt's 46. William Lemke of the newly formed Union Party was the third party candidate hwo made the largest impact, taking two percent of the popular vote.
