Share of second-hand clothes among all clothes bought in Sweden 2018

In a survey conducted in September 2018, Swedish consumers were asked how much of all clothing they bought that was second-hand. 23 percent of respondents considered a small part of their clothing to be second-hand. More than 60 percent stated that they have not bought any second-hand clothing that year. They were asked the same question for home textiles, and the share of respondents considering a small part to be second-hand amounted to 15 percent. The majority stated that they had not bought any second-hand home textiles.

 Why do Swedes buy second-hand clothing? 

   Among the respondents that bought second hand, the main reason for buying second-hand clothing was the cheap price, named by 62 percent. The aspect of the positive impact on the climate and environment was decisive for 52 percent, while only a small share bought second-hand clothing because their friends did so.

Borrow, share or rent? 

   According to the same survey, almost 80 percent of Swedes never borrow, share or rent clothes. By comparison, approximately 20 percent do it occasionally or even often.
