Most of the banks in Norway during the period from 2009 to 2021 were "sparebankar", which is a certain kind of Norwegian savings banks, but the number of these banks decreased throughout the period. In 2021, 91 out of the total number of 134 banks were sparebankar. During the same year, 25 were commercial banks and 18 were branches of foreign banks. Between 2009 and 2021, only the number of foreign bank branches increased.
