The number of named storms in the Atlantic Ocean has increased over the last 30 years. From 1981 to 1990 the number of named storms in this region was 96, while most recently, between 2011 and 2020, some 166 storms were named. The U.S. National Weather Services names storms that are strong enough to be tropical storms in order to demonstrate the significance of the storm.
