In 2022, Japan recorded around 3.97 thousand national flag vessels of 100 gross tonnage or over. Passenger ships accounted for roughly nine percent of national flag vessels, with ferries representing an alternative mode of transportation to connect Okinawa, Hokkaido, Shikoku, and other smaller islands to the Japanese main island Honshu.
