Revenue of non-JR railways from passenger transport in Japan in FY 2012-2021
In the fiscal year 2021, private railway companies in Japan other than the Japan Railways (JR) Group earned around 1.83 trillion Japanese yen of railway fare revenue. Railroad transport is the dominant mass transit system in Japan, encompassing local systems, from trams to high-speed railway lines for long-distance travels, such as the JR Group-operated Japanese bullet train, also known as Shinkansen.
