Revenue of JR from passenger rail transport in Japan FY 2012-2021
In the fiscal year 2021, the Japan Railway (JR) companies earned around 2.4 trillion Japanese yen of railway fare revenue, decreasing from roughly 4.26 trillion yen in 2019, showing the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the industry. Railroad transport is the dominant mass transit system in Japan encompassing local systems, from trams to high-speed railway lines for long-distance travels, such as the JR Group-operated Japanese bullet train, also known as Shinkansen.
