Diesel had the highest values of around 88.2 billion liters in volume among fuels consumed in India for 2020, followed by gasoline or petrol with a consumption volume of about 37.2 billion liters for the same year.

Energy consumption in India

India was one of the largest consumers of primary energy globally in 2020. Fuel consumption was forecast to decrease in 2020. This decrease is due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, as stringent lockdowns were put in place by the Indian government, which halted most business activities and transportation networks. The Indian government imposed fuel subsidies, to help control prices as consumption volume of petroleum products across the country.

India's fuel demand

In India, coal remains the leading primary source of energy in 2020, meeting the needs of almost half of all energy demand. Crude oil comes ranks second with meeting a quarter of all energy demand in the country. With COVID-19 restrictions relaxing across the globe, India’s fuel consumption is expected to increase in 2021.
