Women in the film industry in Sweden 2000-2016, by job type

The share of full-length movies with women working as either screenwriters, directors, or producers in Sweden nearly doubled between 2000 and 2016. In detail, only 21 percent of movies had a woman as director in the early 2000s, but by 2013 to 2016, this figure increased to 49 percent. However, the only job function where the share of movies with a woman in a key position exceeded that of men was in movie production, amounting to 54 percent recently.

Regarding the ten most viewed cinema movies in Sweden premiered in the years from 2012 to 2016, men accounted for 70 percent of the jobs in the country’s film industry. In detail, 80 percent of the Swedish movies were directed and even all movies were written by men. In comparison, producer was the profession that was equally distributed among both genders.

Additionally, the Swedish film industry engaged especially men for a lead role. The same applies for other countries in the world. 42.9 percent of roles in comedy movies produced in the United States in 2017, for example, were occupied by women.
