Japan’s five super general contractors
Takenaka Corporation is one of the five super general contractors in Japan, the so-called Super Zenecon. Along with Taneka Corporation, the major general contractor group is comprised of Obayashi Corporation, Tasei Corporation, Kajima Corporation, and Shimizu Corporation. The five leading general contractors have a long history; the foundation of Shimizu Corporation dates back to 1804. Each company generates an annual revenue of one trillion Japanese yen and engages in a wide variety of construction and non-construction business segments in Japan and overseas.
Impact of the Tokyo Olympics
Over the past decade, the construction industry has made a growing contribution to the gross domestic product in Japan. Since Tokyo was selected to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2013, the international sporting event has been a key driver for the Japanese construction industry. In preparation for the games, major construction projects, such as the reconstruction of the National Stadium, were launched. Further large-scale construction projects have been planned for the World Expo 2025 in Osaka.
