According to a survey on substance use in India between December 2017 and October 2018, heroin and buprenorphine was predominantly injected in the three months preceding the time of the survey. This was highest compared to other drugs at 46 percent each. More alarmingly, a substantial proportion of respondents reported risky injecting practices like sharing needles and syringes in the year before the survey was conducted.
