According to a survey on substance use in India between December 2017 and October 2018, the state of Uttar Pradesh had 16 million people who needed help for alcohol-related problems. This was the highest number of alcohol dependents in any state in the country by a large margin. Andhra Pradesh came second with about 4.6 million problematic users of alcohol.
