In 2023, the state of Sonora was the largest gold producer in Mexico, accounting for nearly a quarter of the country's output. That year, production in Zacatecas amounted to almost 32 metric tons. The state of Zacatecas ranked in close second, with around 30.7 metric tons of gold production, or nearly 24 percent of Mexico's gold mine production that year.
