Number of NHS dentists in England 2008-2023, by age
In 2022/23, over 8.6 thousand NHS dentists in England were aged below 35 years of age, the highest number across the age groups. Before the pandemic, the only age group which has seen a decline in numbers over the years was among those aged 45 to 54 years, dropping from just above five thousand in 2008/09 to slightly below five thousand in 2018/19. However, in 2022/23 this was the only age group where numbers have returned to pre-pandemic levels.
