Number of NHS dentists in England 2008-2023, by gender
In 2018/19 there were more female NHS dentists in England than male for the first time in the provided time period, and this trend has continued since then coming to nearly 13 thousand female dentists and over 11.2 thousand male dentists in 2022/23. The overall increase in the number of dentists in NHS has been driven solely by increase in female dentists. On the other hand the number of male dentists has been declining slightly over the time period shown, with larger decreases still since the pandemic.
