That year, the number of wildfires in the Legal Amazon decreased by some 12.5 percent in comparison to the previous year. The Legal Amazon area (or Amazônia Legal, in Portuguese) comprises most of the territory of nine Brazilian states, namely Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima, and Tocantins.
