According to a survey conducted by Ipsos in June 2019, the majority of Malaysian respondents agreed that social media bans were ineffective because there were many ways to bypass it, with around 16 percent strongly agreeing with the statement.
The background of the survey was a temporary social media ban by the government in Sri Lanka in April 2019 in the wake of a fatal terrorist attack.
