In 2018, over 556,000 animals were used for scientific research in Belgium. About half, or nearly 251,700 animals were used for basic research purposes. Basic research covers subjects such as oncology, nervous and immune systems, and more. During that year, roughly 141 thousand animals were used for regulatory and routine production purposes. These means cover notably quality control, toxicity, and safety testings.
