In autumn 2018, Italy auctioned 5G frequencies to its major mobile operators. The auction raised over 6.5 billion euros in total and saw Telecom Italia and Vodafone as the biggest spenders. Having launched in the Italian market in 2018, the mobile network provider Iliad invested about 1.2 billion euros in 5G infrastructure, about half the expenditure of Telecom Italia and Vodafone. With an investment of about 2.4 billion euros each, they managed to secure themselves the largest packets of frequencies in the 3.7 GHz band, the best frequencies for 5G implementation.
