The business world is a cutthroat environment, with mergers and acquisitions (M&A) being no exception. Hostile takeovers are when an acquiring company buys a target firm by going directly to the company's shareholders or by initiating the replacement of those that stand in the deal’s way. Between 1985 and 2018 there were a total of 618 hostile takeovers across Europe.
UK kings of the hostile takeover
In Europe, between 1985 and 2018, the United Kingdom (UK) had by far the highest number of hostile merger and acquisition takeovers according to data provided by the Institute for Mergers, Acquisitions and Alliances (IMAA). The total value of hostile takeovers in the UK amounted to more than 500 billion U.S dollars.
Cross border M&A
Europe is made up of some of the world’s most attractive companies for cross border activity. Both the UK and Germany are included in the top five most targeted nations globally. In terms of countries that target cross border activity, the UK was once again included in the top five nations worldwide.
