According to a survey conducted by Ipsos in June 2019, 45 percent of Australian respondents said that they disagreed with cutting off social media platforms at times of crisis, as most individuals have the capability to spot fake news. Eleven percent strongly agreed that they would not support a temporary social media ban for this reason.

Respondents were asked: "For each of the following, please indicate if you strongly agree, somewhat agree, somewhat disagree or strongly disagree: I think that most people are capable of separating fact from fiction, so I would not support a temporary social media ban to stop the flow of fake news."
