Roughly 55 percent of U.S. youth aged between 3 and 17 years with a family income of less than the federal poverty level were exposed to secondhand smoke between 2013 and 2016, compared to 16 percent of youth in the same age group but having a family income at or above 4 times the federal poverty level.
Secondhand smoke exposure can cause severe and fatal health problems among youth such as asthma, respiratory and ear infections, sudden infant death syndrome.
