In June 2019, the majority of the surveyed Russians were convinced that the Chernobyl catastrophe was caused by the negligence of operators and maintenance personnel. Moreover, 22 percent of the participants in the most recent survey claimed that a technical breakdown in the control system of the reactor was the main driver of the disaster at the nuclear station. To compare, the most popular answer in March 2006 was the lack of a system of measurements to protect people from technological catastrophes.
