As of 2019, 22 percent of the respondents indicated that the reason to refuse a smart meter is that according to them, a smart meter has no added value. Approximately 20 percent mentioned it is unreliable, whereas 15 percent said that solar panels were the reason for refusing a smart meter. As of December 31, 2020, at least 80 percent of all Dutch households should have switched their gas and electricity meters for smart meters (on the basis of European agreements). Roughly 55 percent of the households own a smart meter in 2019.
