From 2013 to 2018, the occupancy rate of the seven major upper-upscale and upper-midscale hotels in the Shanghai Pudong Expo area in China rose from 58 percent to 74 percent. In 2018, around 2,960 room nights were available in the seven hotels. The steady occupancy rate growth was stimulated by the Shanghai Free Trade Zone establishment and the opening of the National Exhibition and Convention Center.

The study covers the market performance from three upper-upscale and four upper midscale hotels in Pudong Expo area. They are Sheraton Grand Shanghai Pudong Hotel & Residences, InterContinental Shanghai Expo, Shanghai Marriott Hotel Riverside, DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Shanghai (Pudong), Four Points by Sheraton
Shanghai (Pudong), Holiday Inn Shanghai Pudong Nanpu, and Holiday Inn Shanghai Jinxiu.
