Average online spend APAC 2017-2022

Consumers have clearly demonstrated enthusiasm for the Asia-Pacific region’s digital revolution, racking up an average online spend of almost 2.2 thousand U.S. dollars in 2020. However, the e-commerce spending per capita considerably decreased in 2022, to 739 U.S. dollars.

 Increased ability through digitalization

In the era of digitalization, internet access and digital connectivity has soared across the Asia Pacific region. E-commerce appears to be the present and future focus of the region, with penetration levels forecasted to increase steadily. Consumers across Southeast Asia are predicted to increase their digital spend drastically by 2025, with Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam leading the digital wave.

 The future of e-commerce 

  In the unprecedented times of the global coronavirus pandemic, the e-commerce sector emerged unscathed. Reacting to store closures and lockdown periods, retailers turned their sights to e-commerce to survive the economic shutdown. Therefore, it is no surprise that digital spending peaked in 2020. With e-commerce sales and penetration expected to increase significantly, it certainly appears as though the e-commerce sector will stand firm in the Asia Pacific region in the years to come.
