Global leading producers of coconuts 2023
Indonesia is the world's leading coconut producer in 2023, with about 17.97 million metric tons of coconuts produced. That year, the Philippines were the second largest coconut producer in the world, accounting for around 14.89 million metric tons of global production volume.
Why is the coconut so versatile?
One of the world’s most versatile products, the coconut is classified as a drupe, which is at once a fruit, a seed and a nut. The coconut tree can provide sources of food, fuel, medicine or even building material due to the versatility of the coconut. Fuel and charcoal can be made from the coconut shell, while coconut oil and coconut milk can be extracted from the inner flesh of the mature seed. Coconut milk has become particularly popular with people adopting plant-based diets, and as such the market value of coconut milk worldwide is expected to grow more than two-fold to reach approximately 1.78 billion U.S. dollars by 2027.
Coconut oil
Coconut oil is among the prevalent vegetable oils accessible to consumers around the world. The global production volume of coconut oil reached approximately 3.59 million metric tons in 2022/23, remaining stable and without recording any significant fluctuations since 2012/13. The Philippines was the leading country in coconut oil consumption as of 2023, with around 695 thousand metric tons of coconut oil consumed in that year. The European Union (EU-27) and the United States rounded out the top three.
