As of May 2019, sales of low sugar carbonated drinks in Malaysia reached 17.9 million liters. Malaysia introduced a 'sugar tax' in 2019, imposing an excise duty of 40 Malaysian sen per liter in sweetened beverages. Through this, the government hopes to combat the high rates of obesity and diabetes in Malaysia.
