Patent applications for fuel-cell technologies reached a peak in 2014 with some 9,576 patent applications worldwide. Fuell-cells use chemical energy to create electricity but unlike conventional batteries, the chemical reaction requires fuel to react with oxygen. The technology has been used as clean alternative fuel for cars and competes against battery electric vehicles. Market intelligence firm IPlytitics suggest that patents will drop again in 2019 but note that fuel-cell technologies are continuing to develop. More insights on the matter are provided by IPlytics.
