Employed population share by status in Ecuador

In 2019, not even half (48.8 percent) of the employed population of Ecuador held “paid employment jobs”, or jobs where they held employment contracts with right to basic remuneration. The percentage of employees and employers in the South American country has overall continuously decreased in recent years, while there was a rise in the share of own-account workers and contributing family workers. "The employed comprise all persons of working age who, during a specified brief period, were in one of the following categories: a) paid employment (whether at work or with a job but not at work); or b) self-employment (whether at work or with an enterprise but not at work). Data are disaggregated by status in employment according to the latest version of the International Standard Classification of Status in Employment (ICSE-93). Status in employment refers to the type of explicit or implicit contract of employment the person has with other persons or organizations. The basic criteria used to define the groups of the classification are the type of economic risk and the type of authority over establishments and other workers which the job incumbents have or will have."
