In 2019, approximately 26.6 percent of the Costa Ricans who were employed were considered self-employed, or having a job whose remuneration is directly dependent upon the profits derived from the goods and services provided. Although in recent years the share of self-employed workers in the country has been increasing, Costa Rica is still among the Latin American countries with the lowest rates of self-employed workers.
