During the fiscal year 2016, the output value from the production of coconuts in India was the highest among plantation crops at over 128 billion rupees. Coconut trees and their products were used extensively, specifically in coastal areas of the country. Areca nut or betel nut came in second at about 89 billion rupees that year. This was used widely across the sub-continent in paan, a post-meal digestive wrapped in betel leaves.
