In 2018, there were 1,752 dry cargo ships with over ten thousand shipping capacity and 1,249 oil tankers working in domestic coastal trading in China. In 2019 May, Beijing issued the new regulation, Safety Supervision and Administration Regulations for Marine Solid Bulk Goods, to enhance the management of dry bulk cargo and reduce the losses caused by liquefaction.

Bulk carriers, general cargo vessels and ships with under ten thousand tons capacity are excluded from the figure of dry cargo ships.
Oil tankers are those used for carrying crude oil and refined oil products.
Chemical product tankers are those carrying oil and chemical products.
Only vessels with over 700 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) are counted as container vessels and multi-purpose vessels are excluded.
