The gross value added by crop production accounted to over ten trillion Indian rupees in India in fiscal year 2017. This was an increase of about seven percent from the previous fiscal year. Crops contributed the largest share of GVA in agriculture. About 60 percent of Indians, specifically in rural areas depend on farming for their livelihood. Unsurprisingly, it is the backbone of the Indian economy.
