In fiscal year 2018, small-sized ryokans recorded on average just under ten thousand overnight guests, an increase from about 8,181 guests in fiscal 2013. Ryokan refers to Japanese style inns furnished in a traditional manner, with rooms covered with tatami mats and sliding doors.
