As of 2018, over 111 thousand village and small-town councils, also known as Gram Panchayats, were connected by fiber optic cables across India. Out of this, Uttar Pradesh had the highest number at over 26.6 thousand, followed by Maharashtra with over 13 thousand cables during that time.
