According to the Indian government, 34 extremists were killed in incidents related to insurgency in the northeast of India in 2018. The report did not clearly state what the parameters of extremism in this case entailed.
This belt consists of seven states, where tensions have existed between multiple armed separatist factions and the central government for decades. While some separatist groups had been demanding independence from the country, others had been seeking more regional autonomy and tribal laws.
