According to a survey on sexual harassment conducted in Singapore in 2019, 54 percent of respondents who reported having experienced sexual harassment reported it to their friends. Of those who have faced sexual harassment, only 52 percent of the respondents reported or told someone about the incident.
In Singapore, the term “sexual harassment” does not yet have a legal definition. However, the Protection from Harassment Act (“POHA”) 2014 provides various criminal sanctions, civil and self-help remedies to better protect people from harassment and related anti-social behavior. Unfortunately, applying for an order under POHA is complicated and costly. Applicants would need a lawyer to assist in the preparation and submission of documents and subsequent proceedings, which can be financially restrictive.
